THE FACTS

What YouTube thumbnail resolutions actually exist?

YouTube uses several standard thumbnail labels, but those labels are not guarantees. The important number is the actual pixel size returned by the CDN.

Thumbnail label Nominal size What it means
maxresdefault 1280×720 Highest public thumbnail size; may be unavailable for some videos.
sddefault 640×480 Standard-definition thumbnail; not always available.
hqdefault 480×360 High-quality fallback and one of the most reliable sizes.
mqdefault 320×180 Medium-quality thumbnail.
default 120×90 Small default thumbnail.
01

Why isn't a 4K thumbnail generated?

A video's upload resolution and its public thumbnail resolution are separate things. A creator can upload a video in 4K or even 8K, but YouTube's public thumbnail CDN still has a 1280×720 ceiling for its standard thumbnail endpoint.

02

Why do some thumbnail labels fail?

YouTube does not always return an HTTP 404 when a thumbnail size is missing. Instead, some unavailable sizes return a small generic placeholder image with HTTP 200. That's why this checker measures the loaded image dimensions instead of trusting the URL or filename.

03

Why can the source video be 4K?

The thumbnail is a separate image generated for YouTube's platform. The source video's resolution does not automatically determine the resolution of the public thumbnail image.

FAQ

YouTube 4K Thumbnail Checker FAQs

Why can't I get a true 4K YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube's public thumbnail CDN does not provide a 3840×2160 thumbnail endpoint. Its highest standard public thumbnail size is 1280×720, even when the original video was uploaded in 4K or 8K.

My video is 4K. Why is the thumbnail only 1280×720?

Video resolution and thumbnail resolution are separate. A 4K upload can have a 1280×720 public thumbnail because YouTube's standard thumbnail CDN has its own resolution ceiling.

Is 1280×720 good enough for common use cases?

For websites, blog posts, video embeds and social sharing, 1280×720 is often more than adequate. It is less suitable for large-format print because the pixel dimensions are relatively small for high-DPI printing.

Why is maxresdefault missing for some of my videos?

Some videos do not have a public max-resolution thumbnail available. This can happen with older, lower-quality uploads and some live or Shorts content. YouTube may also return a small placeholder instead of a normal HTTP 404, which is why this checker measures the image itself.

Do you store anything I check?

This tool is designed to run entirely in your browser. The video ID is used to request public YouTube thumbnail images and optional public oEmbed metadata. No backend is required for the thumbnail dimension checks.
