Why Is the Maxres Thumbnail Not Available?
YouTube does not always provide a 1280 × 720 maxresdefault.jpg thumbnail. This can happen with live streams, older videos, Shorts, or videos where the creator has not uploaded a high-resolution custom thumbnail.
An important detail is that a missing thumbnail does not necessarily return a normal 404 response. YouTube can return a small gray placeholder image instead. This downloader checks the actual image dimensions and marks that resolution as unavailable instead of presenting the placeholder as a real thumbnail.

Why is maxres not available for my live stream?
The 1280 × 720 maxres thumbnail is not guaranteed for every YouTube video or live stream. If YouTube does not provide that resolution, the downloader identifies it as unavailable rather than treating its small placeholder image as a real 1280 × 720 thumbnail.
Does this work while I'm still live?
Yes. The downloader can request the thumbnail associated with an active YouTube live stream. However, YouTube may serve the creator's custom thumbnail or an automatically generated broadcast frame. The tool therefore describes the result as the current thumbnail rather than claiming which type YouTube is serving.
Can I download a private or unlisted stream's thumbnail?
Thumbnail availability depends on what YouTube publicly serves for that video. This tool does not bypass YouTube privacy controls or authentication requirements. If YouTube does not expose the thumbnail publicly, the tool cannot retrieve it.
