Test Your Thumbnail Before You Publish
A YouTube thumbnail tester answers one question: will this image still work when it is small, crowded by other videos and half-covered by a timestamp? Upload below and find out in seconds.
Every preview, score and fix runs in your browser. Add a second design and the tool compares both in the same feed.
Add your thumbnail
Add one image, or two to compare them in the same feed.
Files stay in your browser. Linked thumbnails can be previewed, but some browsers block scoring them. Upload the file for a full score.
See it live on YouTube
Your thumbnail sits among real-looking videos. Try filters to test contrast and small-size impact.
Creative checklist
A tool can't judge these. Tick what is true. They're tracked separately from the score.
What Is a YouTube Thumbnail Tester?
Viewers judge a thumbnail in under a second. A YouTube thumbnail tester lets you check that first impression before the video goes live, instead of finding out from a weak click-through rate.
Our tool places your image inside a realistic YouTube layout. It also measures the technical and visual basics that make a thumbnail easy to read at a glance.
How Does the YouTube Thumbnail Tester Work?
You add one or two images. The tool analyses them inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server. It then runs nine automatic checks in three groups:
- Specs: resolution, 16:9 ratio, file size and format.
- Clarity: brightness, contrast and colour.
- Simplicity: visual clutter and the corner hidden by the duration badge.
The result is a score from 0 to 100, plus a plain-language fix for every check that falls short. With a second image, it compares both designs side by side.
What Makes a Good YouTube Thumbnail?
Correct size and format
Use 1280 by 720 pixels in 16:9, under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF. YouTube lists these rules on its official thumbnail help page.
Strong contrast and brightness
Thumbnails often appear around 170 pixels wide. Very dark or washed-out images lose their subject at that size. Use the grayscale filter to see whether your subject still stands out.
One focal point
A busy image turns into noise in the feed. Aim for one subject and four words of text or fewer.
A clear bottom-right corner
YouTube covers that corner with the video length. Switch on Safe zones in the tool to see exactly what gets hidden. Our Shorts Safe Zone Checker covers similar limits for vertical video.
How to Use the YouTube Thumbnail Tester in 5 Steps
- Drop in your thumbnail, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
- Add a second design if you want to compare.
- Switch between Home, Watch page, Mobile and Search previews.
- Try the grayscale and squint filters, then check the real-size ladder.
- Read your score and fix every red or amber item.

YouTube Thumbnail Tester vs YouTube Studio Test & Compare
YouTube Studio can split-test thumbnails on real viewers, but only after you publish and only with enough traffic. It works before that: it is instant, private and catches fixable problems such as low contrast or a covered corner.
Use both. Fix the basics here first, then send your best two designs to a live test.
What a YouTube Thumbnail Tester Cannot Tell You
This tool measures what can be measured. It cannot know your audience, your topic or how your title and image work together. A high score means the basics are solid, not that you will get more clicks.
Watch click-through rate and retention after publishing, and read how the YouTube recommendation system uses those signals. If views drop after a change, the YouTube Shadow Ban Detector can help you find out why.
YouTube Thumbnail Tester FAQs
What is the best size for a YouTube thumbnail?
Use 1280 by 720 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, under 2 MB, saved as JPG, PNG or GIF. YouTube requires a width of at least 640 pixels.
Does the YouTube thumbnail tester predict my click-through rate?
No. It checks specs and readability, which can be measured. Clicks depend on your audience and topic, so confirm with a real test in YouTube Studio.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The YouTube thumbnail tester analyses files inside your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Why does the duration badge matter?
YouTube places a duration badge in the bottom-right corner of every thumbnail. Text or faces under it get hidden, so keep that corner simple.
Can I compare two thumbnails with this YouTube thumbnail tester?
Yes. Add Thumbnail A and Thumbnail B and both appear in the same live-looking feed, each with its own score and a side-by-side comparison.
Is the YouTube thumbnail tester free?
Yes. It is free, needs no login and works on desktop and mobile.
Ready? Run the YouTube thumbnail tester on your next upload and fix the weak spots before viewers see them.
